Fall Porch Refresh: Simple Steps to Welcome the Fall Season
A Fresh Start for Fall 🍁
Fall always feels like a reset. Kids are back in school, the air is turning crisp, and it’s the season when friends and family start dropping by more often. But after the rush of summer, porches can look a little tired and neglected. A hedge that grew wild during the busy summer? Planters full of plants that didn’t love the heat? A doormat that’s seen better days? Yep, that’s exactly what my porch looked like. If your porch is in the same boat, don’t worry — you’re not alone.
The good news: it doesn’t take a major renovation to bring your porch back to life. With just a few simple updates, you can decorate your porch to feel clean, welcoming, and ready for the season. Here’s how I refreshed mine in just a weekend.
Step 1: Start with a Clean Slate
The first step to any good refresh is a little cleanup. I started by trimming back several overgrown plants and hedges that were swallowing one side of the porch. Then I dug out a patch of daylilies that had taken over a corner. Clearing those out instantly made the space feel lighter and more intentional. Finally, I swept the porch, cleared out the spiderwebs, and ran the leaf blower over the steps for a truly clean slate
Try this:
- Trim hedges and shrubs that are looking shaggy.
- Remove any plants that didn’t survive summer heat.
- Add fresh mulch. Fall is the perfect time to get ahead of weeds.
- Sweep and use a leaf-blower to clear out leaves and debris.
- Remember: Fall is actually a great time for planting perennials. The heat has passed, but the soil is still warm enough for roots to get established before frost.

Step 2: Refresh Your Doormat
This is the quickest win of all. A fresh doormat sets the tone before anyone even steps inside. For fall, I swapped in a simple solid black mat that instantly made the entryway feel clean and modern.
Try this:
- Replace your tired mat with something fresh.
- Layer a plaid or buffalo check rug underneath for texture.
- Add a boot tray if you’re expecting muddy weather.

Step 3: Add Seasonal Plants
Nothing says “fall” like planters full of rich color. After clearing out the tired summer plants, I started fresh with seasonal picks. I kept it simple with one big mum and a croton petra. The lovely colors bring some Fall cheer.
Try this:
- Use mums, ornamental kale, pansies, or ivy for easy fall color. Even just one big mum in a pot makes a difference if you’re short on time.
- If you love tropicals (like croton), just remember they’ll need to come indoors before frost. In Seattle, I’ll bring these inside by November.
- Re-home any perennials from your planters into your garden beds before adding new seasonal plants. I moved the sedge from my summer planter to my garden.

Step 4: Update Your House Numbers
This is one of those details that often gets overlooked, but it makes a huge difference in how fresh and modern your entry feels. Our old numbers were on the brick wall, and they weren’t easy to see. I swapped them out for sleek black floating numbers mounted directly onto the new cedar-wrapped column. The effect was instant—clean, modern, and eye-catching from the street.
Try this:
- Replace dated numbers with a fresh style that matches your home’s character.
- Mount directly for a modern look, or create a simple wood plaque.
- Choose a finish that contrasts with your siding or trim so they stand out.
Step 5: Update Your Lighting
As the days get shorter, lighting becomes one of the most impactful things you can change. Our old lantern fixture had definitely seen better days, and swapping it out for a sleek modern light made the whole porch feel more polished. I also added a couple of solar lights to brighten the walkway where it was still dim.
Try this:
- Swap an outdated fixture for something modern and warm.
- Add pathway lights or lanterns with LED candles.
- Even a simple bulb upgrade can make a huge difference in brightness and color.

Step 6: Add a Touch of Seasonal Decor
Once the basics were in place, it was time for the fun part. I tied a simple fall ribbon on my boxwood wreath to give it a fall look, put a couple of pumpkins near the steps, and suddenly the porch felt festive and inviting.
Try this:
- Add a seasonal wreath with plaid ribbon.
- Stack pumpkins and gourds near the steps.
- Consider a DIY fall sign (I’m still working on mine!) or a reusable “Hello + insert” seasonal sign idea.
Bonus Points: Go Big
If you’re ready for a bigger project (maybe not a one-weekend thing 😉), consider one of these statement upgrades:
- Cedar-wrapped porch column — this was my recent big project, and I’ll be sharing all the details in another post soon!
- Painting your front door in a bold, seasonal-friendly color.

Wrapping Up
When I step back now, the porch feels completely different. It’s clean, warm, and ready to welcome Fall! While I also tackled one bigger project (wrapping the porch column in cedar), even without that, the refresh would still feel dramatic.
If your porch is looking a little worn after summer, I hope this inspires you to give it a little love. With just a weekend of effort, you can decorate a space that feels welcoming for guests — and gives you a boost every time you walk up to your door.
